Starting a business is never easy. It’s all consuming! While this is the first time the TUBR team has ever started a business, we don’t believe it’s made any easier or harder by starting in the middle of a global pandemic. Traditional techniques aren't possible, but the world of virtual opens new opportunities. We can only speak for our experience so far, but here’s a little sneak peek into the way we are navigating this new adventure.
Get used to feeling fear
We’re taught that fear is bad, but when you’re starting a business, you need to embrace fear. As new founders we appreciated from day one that we were going to be fearful, overwhelmed and completely lost from time to time. We made a pledge to each other that we would use the fear we feel to motivate us, push us to learn more, act smarter and drive forward.
Imposter syndrome is real
It’s true! When starting a new company you will feel the impact of imposter syndrome. Why am I the right team member to solve this problem? How will I convince others that I am when there are days I’m not sure myself? This is just another version of fear. We remind ourselves before every meeting that we know the user, we know the problem and while we don’t know everything we know we’re a smart, capable team that can figure it out. That moment when everyone laughs us out of the room because we have no idea what we’re doing hasn’t happened yet - and it won’t because we do the hard work to get the job done.
Get used to being virtual
We lived in a virtual world prior to Covid-19 turning our lives upside down; but now this reality is amplified. There are days you might not see another person, might not get a single response, or your virtual meeting room might never be used. There are days which feel like we’re the only people who know what we’re doing and why it’s important. We just get used to the feeling and keep emailing, calling, networking, booking meetings and posting on social media, because someone is watching and is probably interested. Our wins come in waves, several in a row and then a bit of a lull. We continue to test the market, listen to users, and talk to investors so we can stay in the best position to get the wins.
Focus on the wins, but count the losses
The step-mother of our CEO, Dash Tabor, used to tap her hands on the table to get Dash’s attention and then say “Honey, you celebrate every no. Count them and learn about how many no responses you need before you get a yes. Learn something from each no and you’ll start to understand how close you are to the next win.” That’s what we do at TUBR; we learn from every mistake and we count them, improving and adapting. We celebrate the ‘no’ because we know the right ‘yes’ will happen.
Surround yourself with the right people
Last, but certainly not least, what do you need to start a company in the middle of a pandemic? A strong support system and an amazing team. Make sure you build your team with people you respect, who share the company vision, are willing to work hard, and will help you overcome all the obstacles that will most definitely come your way.
